To train or not to train

All has been quiet on the training front. My post-race soreness reached new levels (am I getting older?!) which made it easy to forget training for a few days. So I just hung out with mom and enjoyed life … a nice glass of wine in Trondheim after the race … and an amazing organic feast at Tivärs Gård on Norderön …

This weekend we had a spectacular evening on Bynäset beach watching the sunset at 11 pm.  No wind, no bugs, a great campfire, yummy hot dogs and a great view to Åreskutan.

Completely forgetting about training is not easy for me, but my Funbeat.net RSS feed on my website shows that I have, in fact, abstained.  Tough when I’m thinking about all the things I want to improve before the next race.

This afternoon — after 8 days — I had my first long session: 2 hrs on the road bike. The goal was a high cadence (low stress on leg muscles) and easy aerobic effort (low stress on heart). I’m trying to awaken that muscle memory and find that smooth pedal stroke I usually have (OK, I’m really just trying to erase that nightmare feeling I had failing to keep up with Björn on Gettrappet …)

Anyway, it was a solid session with a steady HR in the 140s.  These kind of trainings are not as fulfilling as an adrenaline-filled interval session, but I reckon they’re more valuable for endurance athletes (especially in this post-race recovery period).

Compare the above to the ultra “sufferfest” of ÅEC, with a HR that rarely sunk below 170 My max is somewhere around 185-ish (note on curve below – the first 10 min and last 10 min are not part of the race)

The goal now is to get some solid training under my belt and get ready for some local races in Jämtland ! And even a new multisport race I just found in Stavanger, Norway — more on that soon …

PS Two cool things to check out:

(1) a few interesting “Husky podcasts” (in Swedish) by Magnus Ormestad. Listen to my thoughts about ÅEC the day before the race, along with interviews of John Karlson, Björn Rydvall, and Multi-Mike.

(2) Get pysched for SM in Helags with this video !
