13 weeks to Coast to Coast

Yo!

Chillin’ on a much-needed rest day. I decided to put together a Coast to Coast game plan to ensure a better performance in 2014 (see previous blog about the race course itself).

Coast to Coast planning

I started by going through my weaknesses and how to improve upon them. Some are general weaknesses (prioritize my time better!), but others are specific to the Coast to Coast  (get faster off the beach at the start!). It’s not rocket science to create a plan – you just have to be honest with yourself – but it can be challenging to stick to it. Here’s what I came up with

I’m looking forward to the Waimak Classic paddle race in two weeks. It’s a chance to paddle the same 67 km stretch we’ll be doing in the coast to coast. I’ll be on the starting line just 4 days after landing in NZ. It will look something like this …

Threshold test

As I wrote in a previous blog, I did a max threshold test in a sports lab in Östersund 3 weeks ago. The goal was to see where my fitness level was and to refine my heart rate zones for upcoming training.

Here’s what the test looked like ….

The blue line is my last test in Nov 2012 and the dotted line is from Nov 2013.

Well, I’m not in the same form I was in Nov 2012. My body isn’t handling the lactic acid (by-product from exercise) as efficiently as it did a year ago. That means I have some work ahead of me (long distance sessions to improve my efficiency and intervals to strengthen my heart and lungs). I know I can reach that previous form, I just have to be smart about how I plan my training.

But I also know that these tests are very sensitive and can give different results on different days. I was pretty stressed and not entirely rested before this recent test (was packing up the house for a 6 month vacation), so I’m not sure it truly reflects my form at the moment. But I still gotta train better …

Other random stuff

In other news, I created a preliminary “schedule” for 2014– click on the “Calendar” link above. I’ll be updating this in the next few months as I make some more decisions about which races to focus on next year.

Here is a cool video from my sunglass sponsor X-Kross/Sziols. I’m a profuse sweater, but these shades never fog up. This videos shows why.

Here is a picture from a photoshoot in Östersund at the end of October. Anybody know where this picture was taken? Prize to anybody who can guess it right … (Hint: It was within city limits …)

Swedes develop invisible helmet (!). Anybody seen this? Swedes are famous for inventing everything from dynamite, ball bearings, and of course assemble-it-yourself furniture (OK, maybe not their best invention …). But anyway, now they invented this. I’m not going to describe it — just watch the 2 min video like nearly 12 million others already have. Fascinating.

Another week of work (and Thanksgiving holidays) here in San Diego, before I head to New Zealand. Here is where I work when the sun is shining (which is most of the time..)
