I love point to point training sessions – it’s so much more inspiring and motivating to have a destination, rather than just going “out and back.” And when the journey is through the mountains, it’s even better !
So I’m still on a high from the weekend’s “super mission” and I even followed up with a mid-week mission around Frösön …
Saturday was a 6 hr solo bike mission over the mountains to watch the end of the Helags Adventure race where I had a yummy banquett with all the racers, and then ran back over the mountains to my car on Sunday.
During the ride on Saturday I faced nasty head and side wind and wet, slippery trails. It was tough, but it made me want to come back and ride these ‘bikable’ trails on a dry day. I even ran into Team AXA-adidas — you can just barely make out Mike and Jari’s profile on the distant hill …
Here is a map. Yellow are bike routes and blue are running routes. I did the same “point to point” training last year, too. The yellow on the far left is my bike to Vålådalen in 2012, the other yellow is my bike from Vålådalen in 2013 (not sure which I prefer, they were both great!). The blue on the far right is the run on Sunday.
On Sunday, I ran 6+ hours with Jonas Danvind back over the mountains to the car. I was fueled in part by picking up food that racers had thrown out the night before at the hotel. They packed too much for the race I guess ? I had a great ham and red beet sandwich – thanks to whomever threw that away !
The only mishap came when I tripped on some wire that the Sami had put out to coral reindeer. I fell into the stream and my phone fell in too. Thank god the stream was crystal clear and I saw the phone, otherwise I would have gotten home and wondered where my phone was …
The run featured sheer vertical cliffs, off-road orienteering, and some fine single track running. We were offered free coffee and conversation with Leif the hut caretaker when we stopped for a 90 min lunch at Lunddorsstugorna.

On Wednesday this week the weather was awesome. I took the afternoon off work and Arvid (who’s on vacation) joined me for “Frösön Runt x 2.” I often paddle Frösön Runt — a 25 km picturesc paddle around my island in the middle of Storsjön, but the day’s summer weather called for an extra effort.
After the paddle (blue GPS), we jumped on our MTBs (red GPS) and circumnavigated the island again – on land. We put together almost 5.5 hrs of training. Sometimes playing hooky from work pays off ☺
Arvid’s brand new Epic V14 has a hole in the bottom. We drained at least a L out when we did our portage ! After the paddle I felt strong on the bike despite the hard tempo Arvid and I held during the paddle. But I think that was because I ‘sucked down’ some carbs right after the paddle. I took one of these new Squeezy Drink Gels. It has 40 g carbs plus water (for hot days) and is much easier to get down than a thick gel.
It even has a smart packaging system that stays closed unless you squeeze and suck at the same time. So you can drink half and put the rest in your pocket without worrying about it leaking. Smart ! Arvid is also sponsored by Squeezy but left his at home … and he bonked on the bike … Lesson learned, Arvid ?
Another weekend of training coming up in my local Swedish Mountains together with Derek Collins, my Irish friend. Stay tuned for the next “mission” report …
