Rest (and a cold swim)

So you’re wondering why I haven’t blogged lately?

Answer: This is a multisport blog and I haven’t been multisporting.

Rest is the name of the game. Just over two weeks ago I finished the last stage of the last China race and I haven’t done more than an hour or two of training since then. My routine has been like this:

  • Eat lots of really good Vietnamese food
  • Sit in meetings all day
  • Sit on couch and watch movies
  • Get acupuncture to re-boot my body’s energy
  • Do yoga
  • Take walks in the woods.

PADDLING

Yesterday I got moving: an easy 30 min kayak. The lake was shining with bright yellow Birch leaves and the water perfectly calm.  Feeling confident I took out my air bags and left my skirt at home. I was just going for an easy tour on a flat lake …

After 15 minutes I saw a photographer taking pictures of a wakeboarder. I paddled toward him and he snapped a few photos. Turns out he’s a hell of a photographer.  Thanks Johannes Poignant — check his website for some more outdoor images.

After he took the pics he waved a business card in the air, so that I could email him later and get the pictures. That is when things started to go bad.

He was in a row boat and I was trying to inch closer, but just couldn’t get there. He signaled to me to reach out my paddle and he could drop the business card on the blade. Seemed like a good idea … until I lost my balance and suddenly found myself in the drink.

Water was a bit warmer in China, I can tell you …

VIETNAM

I was in Vietnam for a week after China working on a consulting project (you can read more here). I had a fascinating time visiting with low-income households in the Southernmost tip of Vietnam. We were interviewing them to see how a Swedish-funded development project was progressing. It was going well – not only were they making more income, but they were also protecting the valuable mangrove forests. Here are a few pics … (Thanks to Ana Aponte and our enthusiastic translator Viet Nguyen for these)

These mangroves were slowly coming back after being blasted by Agent Orange in the War.

Our Vietnamese guides were fascinated by my Suunto GPS watch.

Sometimes the put-in wasn’t so easy … I took it easy with an expensive MacBook in my bag

We got a tour through the protected area of the National Park, where economic development and residence is prohibited. It was beautiful. We were guided by a Park Ranger and I spotted a couple of boats hiding along the shore. Our driver immediately did a U turn to check out this suspicious behavior. I thought “Oh crap — are we about to have a confrontation with illegal tree harvesters?!” Turns out they were legally harvesting their limit of clams so all was well… and they snapped this picture of yours truly with really cramped legs …

AN ALL GIRLS ADVENTURE RACE

So there’s going to be an adventure race next July in Sweden that is for girls only. Great idea spearheaded by Aaron Scott who lives in Mora, Sweden, where the “point to point” race will end. Aaron is a Kiwi that feels more at home at 62 degrees N than 45 S (I’ll be trading places with this former Christchurch resident in a few weeks).

Anwyay,  I would love to see more girls get in to adventure racing and multisport and this is a great way to do it. Check out this facebook site —  www.facebook.com/SportkullanAR — (a full website is coming soon) and put this on your calendar! If you want some coaching help, let me know :)

PS Those of you planning to come to my presentation tomorrow night at Velo Rapide Bike Shop should look at my “Calendar” link above. It has been changed  – it’s no longer on the 9th of October, but instead moved to the following Wednesday, the 16th.
