The value of nature: Insights from an endurance athlete and environmental economist
This presentation is aimed at individuals, companies, and organizations looking to build environmental awareness by better understanding the value of nature for our well-being. I mix inspiration from my career as an endurance athlete with insight from work as an environmental economist. I discuss the connection between my two careers and shed light on the connection between nature’s monetary value, an organization’s environmental responsibility and your own mental and physical health.

Background
For 15 years I followed the mantra: work hard – race hard. I finished my PhD in environmental economics and embarked on a fulfilling career as an environmental economist, while also racing as an elite multisport endurance athlete. As I invested more time in my sport – and worked less as an economist – I was able to live my dream: experiencing nature’s wonders while pursing my passion for endurance racing in places like China, New Zealand, Norway, France, the US, and Sweden. Before long I discovered an even better mantra: work less – race more. But was it better?
Mother nature provides society with many benefits: clean water, clear air, pollination for our crops, etc. It also provides opportunities for outdoor recreation. As an environmental economist I put a price on these benefits to raise awareness of these values for politicians and private decision-makers. As a competitive outdoor athlete I’m dependent on these benefits: they inspire me to explore and test my own endurance limits. When I myopically gave up one of my careers to focus on the other, I suddenly realized the connection between my intellectual and physical pursuits. They needed each other. And together they provided balance in my life.
Bakgrund
I 15 år löd min devis: work hard – race hard. Min devis kom att revideras: work less – race more!
