Props to Erik Pütsep and others in Karlstad Multisport for their great coverage of the National Champs, which started at 10.00 this morning.
As you read in a previous post, I decided not to compete, but now I’m regretting it when I see the course and how much hype and excitement Erik has created around the event. There are 40 teams of two competing for 24 hours while running, biking, kayaking, canoeing, swimming on air mattresses and hiking over glaciers … all under the midnight sun (when it comes out, that is …).
The race meeting last night …
Here is an overview of the course and its 9 stages …
Here is a picture of Arvid from Team Statkraft at last year’s event descending from the glacier.
This is how to cover a multisport race ! On their live site (www.24hadventure.se) they have the following:
- A facebook page with pictures of every team so we get to know who we’re gonna be following … not to mention constant updates (!);
- A leader board with updated live GPS tracking;
- An instagram link that volunteers and others can post to during the race;
- A Flicker link with high quality pics;
- A vimeo link with films (2 to 4 min) showing the preparation, pre-race interviews, multisport action, etc; and
- Professional photographers and film crew on site

This is how it’s done folks. This is how you create excitement. This is the future of multisport in Sweden and this will allow the sport to grow and attract more racers, more followers, and more companies. Nice work Erik and Co. !
So what am I doing this weekend? Well, I’m not “only” sitting around and watching GPS trackers. The race is only 100 km ‘as the crow flies’ from where I live so on Saturday morning I’m riding my mountain bike over the mountains to catch some of the action. I’m also helping Erik to pick up some of the orienteering controls on my way there (as long as the last teams have passed of course …
Here is the GPS track of the same ride I did last year in the other direction …
On Saturday night I’m joining the teams for the post race buffet to hear how it went and to enjoy a gourmet meal of reindeer meat and other local treats.
On Sunday morning I’m running back over the mountain to my car – picking up a few more controls on the way. Last year I did the same run in the other direction and it took 7 hrs (see link here)
Who do I think will win?
- Björn and Roban from Team Silva-Haglöfs will be tough to beat in the Male Class. But watch for FJS and AXA-adidas, and Statkraft.
- I would expect Team Silva-Haglöfs (Mattias and Josefina) to battle it out with Team Statkraft (Arvid and Martina). Andreas and Åsa (City Wolfs) may be a dark horse (dark wolf?) and watch out for Fjellstad from Norway.
- Adventure of Sweden – Team Ducati Bicycles have two strong female teams…
Geez, this is really hard to pick … This is the National Champs so this is anybody’s race to win !
“Train hard and race easy” as my friend Jarad Kohlar says … (although I’ve never seen him race easy, I must say …)
