Hello from beautiful Stavanger, Norway. Indeed, Norway was standing first in line when Mother Nature was giving out her goodies …

I’m here to race in the Tripp Trapp Triathlon on Sunday morning – a 5 hour multisport race involving surfski paddling in the world famous Lysefjord (25 km), stair running (exactly 4,444 stairs), mountain running (10 km), and road cycling (30 km). Here is the overview of the course:

There are two videos from past year races on this website – but it’s in Norwegian.
I flew from Trondheim to Stavanger on Thursday and, upon landing, I was still frantically writing emails to try and rent a fast surfski for the race …
In the end, I connected with Hein van Rooyen the owner of Carbonology Sport. He flew in from South Africa to do this race (and SeaMasters race next weekend in Stockholm). Together with Arnt Aasland, who owns the local kayak shop, I was set up with a Carbonology Vault Surfski. Not quite as fast as my boat back home, but beggars can’t be choosers. Hein assured me it’s nonetheless a quick boat.
I arrived on Thursday to go through the course. Kalle has been fantastic, sending me videos, GPS routes, and Google Earth Images so that I can study the fastest route. Here are a few pictures of our scouting trip, which involved a ferry ride, lots of stairs, mountain running, and some cycling …
Kalle and I on the ferry over to the start of the run.

Stair 3,444. Just 1,000 left …
The mountain run is not for road runners …
During the bike ride we ran in to some sheep, which may be a bit of problem during the race …
… but a bigger problem may be the combination of sheep poop and rain on race day …
On Friday, Kalle and I went to the kayak shop and tested my new boat. Thanks to a tailwind, I got to test its “surfing” abilities and got some tips from Hein, a world champ surfskier.
Saturday has been a rest day, but plenty of packing, nutrition planning, and gear checking. Here’s everything I’ll have for the race …
… Carbonology surfski with pack attached for the 2 hr run (has to be transported on the kayak)
… Inov8 190s running shoes
… my road bike with lightweight bladder/pack
Hope to have some cool pics to put up tmw night after the race. Sleep well …
